We live in an
era wherein we can explore what is of value in all the world's cultures. It is our duty to
extract and use all of them, to cherish all of them, that we might reclaim our global
human heritage. Without such a world culture, there can be neither peace in the world nor
the flourishing of any part of the world for any significant length of time. We know too
well today we are all linked together, that the world is one. We know of immediately what
happens in China or Iran and it can affect us strongly. We can no longer live in one
portion of the world and ignore the rest. The
divisions of nation and culture must be swept away like the divisions of states and
provinces within a country which only recently we have had to go beyond. This is not to
deny them their beauty or creative difference but to throw down the artificial boundaries
between them. The air does not stop at any national frontier. The sun does not shine
differently across the border. We should have at least as much compassion ad equanimity as
the elements of nature.
There is much more to humanity than our current history
tells us. It is hidden in our myths, legends and scriptures. Apart from our chronological
history is an invisible or sacred time, the measure of our aspiration for the eternal. In
that we find a spiritual humanity, one seeking the Divine and working for the evolution of
consciousness. It is our connection with that we find in the Vedas and other spiritual
teachings. It is necessary to link up to this greater spiritual sense of the human being
to enable us to go beyond the frontiers which have created the present world crisis.
