| One day the nurse,
Katyayini, overheard a certain confidential discussion between Janaka and his queen Sumati
relating to the future of Naraka. Katyayini scented trouble and determined to remove
Naraka from the court of Janaka at the earliest moment. Katyayini pretended to go out on a
pilgrimage to the Ganges and asked Naraka to escort her. Naraka agreed subject to his
father’s (Janaka’s) permission. Katyayini replied that Janaka was not his
father. - If Naraka only accompanied her to the riverbanks, he would meet his real father.
Janaka was only his foster-father and would not allow him any share in his kingdom. Both
mother and the child slipped out of Janaka’s court and came to the banks of the
Ganges. Naraka learnt there the story of his, birth and came to recognise his putative father. They came by water to Pragjyotisa accompanied by Visnu. Naraka conquered the country from the Kiratas and was installed as king by the great god, Visnu. He was also placed in charge of goddess Kamakhya, and was advised to rule the country having the good of the people at heart. He was further advised not to worship any other gods or goddesses other than Kamakhya and everything would be well with him if he acted accordingly. To quote Kalika Purana: Karatoya sadaganga purvabhagavadhisraya Yavallalita kantasti tavadeva purantava Atradevi mahamaya yoganidra jagatprasum Kamakhya rupamasyaya sadatisthati sobhana Mahadevi mahamayam jaganmataramambikam Kamakhyam tvam vina putra nanya devam yajisyasi Hitohanyatha tvamvirahanagata pranobhavisyati Tasmatara yatnena santayam pratipalaya. |
