KIRTESWARI TEMPLE |
|
The story is
well-known. Lord Siva was grief struck and also made with rage at the death of Sati
his consort as a result of the insult offered to him by his own father-in- law. Lord Siva
started roaming round in an angry mood with the body of Sati Devi and doing Tandava Nritya
at which the world started tottering. To save the world Lord Vishnu was approached
and he followed Siva and started dismembering Sati's body bit by bit from behind with his
Chakra. Which ever place had the honor of
receiving a bit of her body or any portion of her apparel became a Mahapithasthan or
Upapithasthan (place of pilgrimage). As a portion of Sati's Kirti or tiara fell at a
portion of Dahapara the place came to be known as Kiritkona (bit of the Kiriti or tiara)
and it became one of the Upapithas. |
