KIRTESWARI TEMPLE

The village was once full of jungles.  A rather insignificant temple came to prominence slowly when some Sannyasis
came there and started regularly worshipping the deity.  The fame of the place as Upapitha spread and the town of
Murshidabad on the other bank of the Ganga River started prospering.

Mangal Viashnab*3 a contemporary of Mahaprabhu Chaitanya Deva was a Shebait of the Kiritesvari temple.Bhagavan Ray who has given the title of "Bangadhi- kari Mahasay" by Emperor Akbar and made the Kanungo of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa was a devotee of Kiritesvari Devi.

It is said that he and his followers in the coveted post of the Bangadhikari Mahashaya or the Kanungo repaired the temples at Kiritkona and made a regular arrangement for the worship of the deity.  Devotees started pouring into the small village.

3 Mangal Vaishnav had met Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu at Nava-dwip and became the disciple of Gadadhar Prabhu. He had settled down at Kandra village in Burdwan district where he propagated Vaishnavism. His
grandson Bandanchand Thakur sponsored the type of Kirtan songs known as Manohorsahi Kirtans. (See
Murshidabader Itihas in Bengali by Nikhil Nath Roy).
