KIRITESVARI TEMPLE

There was only one high Vedi and a large stone with carvings on the Vedi.  The face of the Devi is depicted on the Vedi.  Black marble stone has been liberally used for seating the devotees. In the Siva temple nearby there is a lingam of black stone and a Buddha image in Dhyanimudra pose, which is worshipped as Bhairav.  Nearby there are two more temples now in ruins.  DarpaNarain had dug out a large and deep tank, which has now become, unfortunately, a source of nuisance.

Darpa Narain started the Kiritesvari mela, which used to be held on every Monday in the month of Paush.4 This mela is still held but has lost its previous glory.  Shiv Narain son of Darpa Narain repaired the roads to the temple and the mela ground and also made some improvements to the temple.  His son Lakh Narain who continued as the Kanungo from the days ofShiraz-ud-daulah to the Company's advent was also a devotee of Kiritesvari Devi.

4 The meal is now held on every Tuesday during Magh month. It is not known when the change was made (District Gazetteer of Murshidabad, by L.S.S. O’Malley, (1014), p. 80.
