THE TEMPLES IN PURULIA |
|
The main
pilgrim routes from Bengal to Orissa by through Purulia district and portions of Bihar.
The pilgrims fromBengal for Jagannath (Puri) passed through Purulia district. The
interdistrict and the interprovincial trade routes connecting Jagannath (Puri) on one
side, Pataliputra (Patna), Varanasi (Benaras) andTamralipta (Tamluk) once a famous port in
Bengal on the other ran through Purulia district.
Bihar was the cradle of Jainism. As many as 20 Tirthankaras (Path-finder) out of the 24
Jain Tirthankaras had attained Nirvana at Parasnath Hill in Bihar. Mahavira, the 24the and
the last Tirthankara was born in Bihar and had obtained his Nirvana (ascension) at
Pawapuri in Patna district. Naturally the district
of Purulia being contiguous with the districts of Dhanbad and Ranchi in Bihar had received
an impact of Jainism. Jain antiquities are literally scattered all over the district of
Purulia. Tradition ascribes Lord Mahavira having visited the province of "Safa"
when he was on a pilgrimage for spreading his cult. |
