THE TEMPLES IN PURULIA

The figure of the antelope is sculptured on the pedestal and there are two rows of three naked figures each over the head cut on each side. The main temple, which is now in ruins, consists of a sanctum, antarala, and a mahamandapa. There are a number of smaller temples by the side of the main temple.

Near about under a tree there is a Jain figure in nudity with the serpent hood spread over the head. From a description that Beglar has left and a visit now, it is clear that many of the figures Beglar saw late in the nineteenth century have now disappeared. Beglar found a number of images at village Suissa also some of which he thought to be Jainas and some Brahmanical.  Suissa has lost most of them now.

The Archaeological Survey of India 4 had also missed a large number of Jain antiquities in a number of other villages in Purulia district. Some of them are at karcha, about six miles from Purulia, Bhawanipur about 8 miles from Purulia and Anai about three miles from Karcha. At Karcha the author found five ancient mounds and a large number of Jain statues.
