TIRUPPATIRIPULIYAR

He noticed that near-by there was no holy tank for the devotees to take a dip before worship, which is the essential rite of a Hindu devotee. He prayed to Lord Siva, who created a few Teerthams, which are known as Sivakarai, Dikpalaka, Dakshina- pinakini, Kedila and Palodai.

Many, including the Devas, have worshipped Lord Pataleeswara and got their desires fulfilled. Indra’s consort Indrani worshipped the Lord on ten consecutive Fridays and got as a boon a son, Jayanta by name. Likewise Adideva was born to Aditi, wife of Kasyapa. The six nymphs of the constellation Krittika worshipped Devi Patalanayaki and got the boon of bringing up Lord Karttikeya as their child from the Saravana Poigai. Further Lord Vishnu and Brahma and all the sages prayed Lord Pataleeswara
and Devi Patalanayaki. Hence this place has become very sacred for the Saivites.
