TIRUPPATIRIPULIYAR |

The legend goes to
show that at Kailas, the heavenly abode of Lord Siva, one day, Siva was in an exhilarating
mood and asked his consort Uma to give him the pleasure of playing a game of chess. They
went on enjoying the game. Uma won every time. It may bethat the World Father, Siva,
purposely sustained defeat at the hands of His consort to heighten the pleasure of the
game.
After several defeats, Siva tried to play a foul game in order to win, but Uma objected to
this and retired from the game much annoyed. Siva requested her to play on, promising not
to indulge in foul play again. Uma was not satisfied with the assurance and suggested that
there should be an umpire to witness the game, preferably Mahavishnu. Siva readily agreed
to this proposal. Maha Vishnu came and sat down as the umpire. Uma continued winning every
time. |
