VEDARANYAM

It is understood that Sri Rama was freed of Brahmahatti Dosha under this tree. So also that Vishwamitra attained Brahminhood; Trisanku attained Swarga and the Yogis headed by Janaka and the Rishis headed by Yajnavalkya attained knowledge of Brahman. The japas (penances), homas, (offerings in fire) and Danas (presents) made under the boughs of this tree meet with boundless
good.

Once Tirujnana Sambandar and Tirunavukkarasu (Appar) came to Vedavana on a pilgrimage. They entered the temple, did Pradakshina, came to the Sannidhi and found that the gate was closed. They came to know that the four Vedas who adored the Lord therein had locked the gate and that since then the daily puja was conducted through a side gate made out for the purpose and that the gate remained closed as no devotee of Siva, capable of opening the gate, had till then visited the temple.

Thereupon, Sambandar requested Appar to sing a song praying to the Lord for the gate to open again. Appar sang entreating the Lord to show mercy on them. The gate opened. The two devotees entered, worshipped the Lord and praised him. While returning, Appar asked Sambandar to pray to the Lord to make the door close again. Sambandar sang a song even at the beginning of which the gateway closed automatically.
