VEDARANYAM

The Lord consented to this and stayed
behind the linga in his matrimonial attire along with Parvati.

When Vishwamitra once went out for hunting, he came to the hermitage of Sage Vasishtha where he was given a rousing reception and pompous feast. Vishwamitra came to know that this was all due to the power of the celestial cow Kamadhenu which was capable of giving anything that was wished for, and asked his host to part with it for him. On Vasishtha's refusal to give a Vishwamitra got wild and then ensued a battle between the two in which Vishwamitra was defeated. In his vexation, Vishwamitra denounced his Kshatriya Bala (might of a warrior) and decided to conduct a penance for achieving the powers of a Brahmarshi.

He did penance in many places but everywhere he met with obstacles. At last, he came to Vedavana and started an austere penance after bath in the holy Manikarnika, Vedamrita and Vedateertha. At the start itself, a voice (an oracle) directed him to conduct the penance they’re it and to worship the Lord of the Vedavana who would fulfil all his ambitions.
