VEDARANYAM

All those who worship the deities of this holy place on the following days of the year will get all things of life and finally attain salvation: the first day of every month; new moon and full-moon days; Krittika days; Mahasisvaratri: Mondays: Fridays: Mahotsava in the month of Masi; and the seventh day of the bright half of the month of Chittiral.

About two miles from Vedaranyam, inside a shrubby jungle at the top of a sand mound, footprints of Shri Rama on a scale of stone are preserved (Rama Padam). The Archaeological Department is the custodian of this sacred piece of stone. While selecting the vantagepoint for crossing the sea to Lanka, Rama had to come to this place and stand at the top of the sand mound to locate Lanka. Finding that the direction pointed the back door of Ravana’s place, the site was abandoned, as a hero should not enter into the enemy’s kingdom through the back door.

The history of Vedaranyam has been well brought out in Tamil and Sanskrit, in 4000 and 1000 verses respectively.
