He
proclaimed his revolutionary relationship with his subjects in
clear-cut terms thus: "All men are my children and just as I
desire for my children that they may
enjoy every kind of prosperity and happiness, in both this world and
the next. So also I desire the same for all men". He went
further, "Just as a man, having made over his child to a
skilful nurse, feels confident and says to himself; "The
skilful nurse is zealous to take care of my child's happiness, even
so my officials have been created for the welfare and happiness of
the country". His paternal attitude thus became self-evident
and ensured a steady progress and ethereal bliss among his people.
To
add to this, Asoka believed that the true conquest in any field of
action is the conquest by the "Right" and not by the
"Might". Coercion and brute-force would not-bring
permanent peace and perpetual bliss. Peaceful means and non-violent
ways ensure solidarity among the people, stability of the kingdom,
vitality of King-ship and divinity of soul.
