His noble example became greatly
instrumental in spreading his religion quick and complete. Its roots went deep in three continents
- Asia, Africa and Europe.
His compassion for the dumb
creatures was unique. To extend the curative conveniences, he established hospitals for
beasts, and birds. He made vast benefactions to monks of all sects and denominations
and treated them with utmost veneration. And they speak volumes of his spirit of
toleration and magnanimous attitude to other faiths. For the supply of
medicinal herbs, he encouraged horticulture. He made provision for the education of
women and caused separate institutions to be constructed for them. Moreover, he introduced
several disciplines and encouraged research studies in the well established four Universities -
Takshasila, Mathura, Ujjain and Nalanda that lured several students from east and west
too. They went back mastering Buddhism to preach in their countries. With such
humane and enlightened measures, he earnestly strove to conquer the whole world by soul force than
physical might and filled the world with 'Dharmagosha' than 'Vijayagosha'. Undoubtedly, he is
the first monarch who made an honest attempt to educate his people into a common view
of the ends and ways of life. All through non-violence and truthfulness.
