FAMOUS
THIRTHAS
This
Gokarna kshetra is famous for many sacred thirthas too. Both atop the hill, on
the shore and around the hill there are several punya thirthas, and they are
associated with gods and goddesses. Koti Thirtha and Gogarbha Thirtha are
located on the hill. The Rama Thirtha lying on the shore near the hill has a
great pull; for, it is associated with Sri Rama. According to the story, Sri
Rama is said to have stayed here worshipping Gokarneswar for sometime to expiate
the sin of Narahatya - killing of Ravana and his company. He was then bathing
daily in this thirtha, hence the name and sanctity. Nearby this are found Sita
and Lakshmna thirthas. And they are so named because of the fact of their taking
bath in them, so visit-worthy. All pilgrims invariably take bath in every one of
them, offering pindas to the manes, and giving hair. Along with them sea bath is
common to all the visiting public and this tradition is honoured and the rituals
observed with utmost sincerity.
