PENUGONDA CITY

Taking the timely guidance of  Bhaskaracharya, the Kulaguru - embodying Brahma amsa, and attending to the assigned duties, the Vysyu munis thrived immensely to the jealousy of Kubera, ruling over Alakapuri, his capital; for, the latter became comparatively less inspiring and unimpressive to speak
the truth.

The vast region commendably conspicuous by its elevation, and bound by the broad rampart walls, and dotted with little hillocks and high mounds lying all around in close proximity, it presented a spectacle of beauty and appeared exceedingly majestic, and so was appropriately called penugonda - means thereby that it is the biggest of the hills around its environs. Another interpretation is - konda stands for gotra which means vamsa and as almost all gotras resided there, it was aptly called Penugonda.
