This
is a renowned TRIPUTI, where the triple aspects - kshetram, thirtham and daivam
seem vying with one another for supremacy. It was the seat of sage Sukabrahma,
who gave asylum to Mother Mahalakshmi, when came down to this region and later
to Sri Maha Vishnu too during his worship of Lakshmi Devi with lotus flowers at
the instance of aerial voice. As it lies on the bank of Swarnamukhi, more so on
the fringe of padmasarovar, its sacrosanct position accelerated the progress of
worship and turned it into prestigious thirtha kshetra. Variously known as
Tiruchanoor, Sri Sukapuri, Tiruchchoginur, Vadirajapuram in legends and history,
this august seat of Mother Padmavathi Devi, the highly sensitive and supremely
self-willed yet compassionate boon-giver created a splendid record in mythology
and made Sri Mahavishnu perform penance for 12 years to appeasing her just anger.
This
Temple is built in Dravidian architectural style with sturdy high prakaras and
broad Mahadwara surmounting a tall multi-tired gopura. There are three holy
shrines in its vast campus-Alagi , perumal, Varadaraja and Padmavathi, but each
is independent and has all the essential parts.
