This
hill temple of great antiquity has a very long legend and Durga Saptasati
embodies several of its awe-inspiring episodes. The story begins with the
atrocious acts perfected by Sumbha Nishumbhas, the formidable demons on getting
several boons. Devas unable to stand the torture went to Mother Parvathi,
consequent on getting negative answers from the Highest. A patient hearing of
their plight melted her heart and so assured help in killing the demons. It was
during that time, there emerged from her Kesa while bathing in Ganges, Kausaki a
dambel of unearthly beauty born to kill those two danavas for daivakarya.
Nodding acceptance, she stationed on the hills. The secret agents of the demons
informed about Kausiki's extra - ordinary charms and advised them to seek her
hand, since a beautiful woman enhance the dignity of the riches, valour, power
and pelf, they pleaded. The witless danavas sent their minister as an emissary
on this errand. She sent reply that she vowed to wed the only valorous person in
the war. His persuasion citing their superabundant sakti did not work upon her.
At once the danavas sent Dumralochana on this with huge army. He was put to
death by her single smile producing a loud menacing sound, and his army was
killed by her mount the lion.
