ANTlQUITY OF THE KSHETRA
The glory of this holy kshetra is vividly described in
Mudgala Purana, and according to it Ganesh was incarnated as
the son of Parshva and Deepavatsala in the-,dim past to
suppress danava krityas of the dreadful demons and restore
Dharma on earth. The scene of action was laid in this region
and called then by the name of Hemavathi. It was ruled by Abhinandana. He performed a great
sacrifice for Jagat Kalyana on a grandiose scale. Devendra, ever conscious of his
power felt that Abhinandana was doing that yagna with a view to- depriving
him of his post. Soon he created a powerful giant called Kaala to create
obstacles and spoil the yagna. Utilising the Satanic forces, he created havoc and
succeeded in stopping it abruptly. Bloated with ego, he destroyed similar yagna
performed by sages then. He was a veritable Yama to every righteous man. And
obtained the apt title of Vigna - the trouble maker and creator of obstacles.
When he continued his asura krityas, the world shook and Bhudevi wailed
piteously. Evil danced naked and virtue was flayed ruthlessly and stamped
down. Then the righteous people unable to bear the tortures prayed to Ganesh
for protection and establishment of Dharma. He assured relief soon.
