Soon
the maharshi consecrated that very location adjoining the sangam and
installed the nectar born Sivalingam. He named the Lord Sangameswar
- standing for the Lord of sangam of three rivers. After the Lord's
demonstration of sports through several miracles, the devotees built
a temple making provision for many minishrines for several deities,
like Lakhsmi, Vishnu, in addition to Saivate gods such as Ganesh,
Muruga and Mother Vedanayaki.
On
account of its location at the confluence and the exquisite
eye-catching colourful scenery around it, it became a centre of
pilgrimage in course of time. Here both the presiding deity - Lord
Siva and His consort seem vying with each other in showering boons
on the bhaktakoti visiting throughout the year. Devotees for taking
vows and redeeming them on crossing the hurdles are visiting in
large numbers perennially. So a township came into being gradually
to catering to the needs of the unending influx of yatris and
paryatakas.
