And
the town grew to such extent that it became a flourishing pilgrim
town even in the beginning of the last century. The then ruling
authorities of the East India Company enchanted by its surrounding
beauty and its salubrious climate made it the headquarters of the
composite district of Salem and Coimbatore. Naturally its importance
started mounting.
Now
begins history with the appointment of William Garrow as the
Collector. By temperament, he was a highly cultured man, owning
commendable virtues of toleration for other religions and dedication
to work. Although an Englishman by birth, education and life-style,
he developed certain adorable sentiments meriting adulation and
emulation, as a matter of fact. He occupied a two-storeyed bunglow
then, and it was opposite the Sangameswar temple.
