The Abode of Lord Jagannath

MAHAPRASAD

The Nivedya ritual is unique. The Bhoga, or food offerings of Jagannath is called Mahaprasad. Perfect equality is maintained in the distribution of the Mahaprasad. All-from prince to pauper are equal in claiming and partaking it as evidenced by the observance of eating by all at a time in one place, sitting side by side. As many as 64 delicacies each is a culinary triumph are offered to the Lord with elaborate rituals. The method of cooking too is unique and they use earthenware vessels only. Seven distinct dishes are cooked at a time in seven vessels of different sizes, keeping them one over the other and placing on one oven.
