It was called by many names in the days of yore.  As many as eleven names are recorded in the scriptures.  They are:  1. Vuchhishta Kshetra, 2. Sri Kshetra, 3. Sankha Kshetra, 4.Purushothama Kshetra, 5. Neeladri, 6. Vudhiyana Pitha, 7.Martya Vaikunta 8. Yavenika Thirtha, 9. Kusasthali, 10. Puri and 11. Sri Jagannatha.

Each name has its own history, evidence and background History and legend embody several awe-inspiring and brew taking anecdotes, illustrating the divinity of the place.  Renowned tourists and pious pilgrims made chronicles of their memorable experiences and observations, testifying to the glory of the place  during their sojourn and stay in this holy kshetra.
