THE SPIRITUAL PATH

In order, therefore, to know what may be done and what may not be done, we must be guided by the pronouncements of the Vedas, which state prescription vidhis and prohibitions nishedas.  Sri Krishna said in the Gita:

"yaha saastravidhimutsrjya vartate kaamakaarathah

na sa siddhimavapnoti na sukham na paraamgatim."

-XVI-23

'He, who, having cast aside the injunctions of the saastras, acts according to his own sweet will, attains not perfection, or happiness or the highest goal.'  'Therefore,' says Sri Krishna, 'let the saastra be your authority in determining what ought to be done and what ought not to be done.  Knowing what-has been prescribed in the saastra, you should perform your action here.'

"tasmaat saastram pramaanam te kaaryaakAarya vyavasthithau.

jnaatvaa saastravidhaanoktam karma kartumihaahasi."

-XVI-24
