The Use of Images
In oriental religions many images, statues and idols are used in worship. This has caused the
charge of idolatry to be leveled against them by western religions. Islam, Judaism and Protestant
Christianity reject all usage of images and consider those who
use them to be religiously perverted.
Yet in Hinduism the use of images is only one of many forms of worship. More strongly than western
religions it also emphasizes the formless or impersonal Divine. Besides the gross form or image of
the deity, subtle geometric and sound and light forms are used as well.
The gross image is just one aspect in directing the mind inward, as well as an aid to seeing the
Divine in the forms of life. Many people in the dharmic traditions use
no images of any kind. It is not that Hinduism is characterized by idolatry so much as it allows the
imagistic and naturalistic approach to the Divine along with all the
others.
