"Howsoever men
approach me, even so do I accept them; for the path which men take on every side is mine,
O Arjuna."
Accordingly Hindus have no quarrel with those who worship God under other names and forms.
They know, and in fact Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa proved, that if they worship Him as
Christ He will come to them as Christ, and if they worship Him as Allah He will come
to them as
Allah.
At the same time Hinduism teaches that God the Absolute is nameless and
formless,
and it is only for our convenience that we invest Him with name and form, just as we can
the one undivided ocean around our country the Bay of Bengal in one place, the Indian
ocean in another and the Arabian Sea in a
third.
The Upanisads describe the Absolute by the
neuter noun Brahman, so as to make the concept clear of all associations of sex. Brahman
in relation to the universe is called Isvara, and lsvara is termed Brahma when He creates,
Visnu when He protects and Rudra then He destroys.
These names denote only the different
aspects of God. That is why they are called Trimurti-the One with three forms. In popular
religion these become separate gods with appropriate symbols, dwelling places, vehicles
and even consorts and children and followers. And each god becomes the starting point of
in numerable myths, which are related in the Purna.
