THE KALIGHAT TEMPLE |
|
Whatever may be
the origin we find it accepted that the Sabarna Choudhurys of Barisa village in 24
Parganas district in Bengal built the present temple and fixed up a large quantity of
devottar land for the worship of the Devi. Among the successive Sevayats of the Kali
Devi different types of Sanyasis that would visit the temple may make particular mention
of Bhuvaneswar who was well known as a Guru Brahmachari. The famous Raja Basanta Roy of
Jessore became his disciple being convinced of his spiritual ascendancy. Although Bhuvaneswar Brahmachari was the pujari Nearabout 1550 A.D.
he is always referred to with great respect. He had consecrated a number of small Salgram
Shilas and put them in the temple. They are still to be seen in the temple. Fixing up of
the Salgram Shilas shows that Bhuvaneswar Brahmachari did not follow the rigid principles
of a Kapalik and did not mind the images of Vishnu. Another Sevayats of the temple was
Kamdev. Lakshi Kanta Mazumdar already referred to be the son of Kamdev. |
