The Company had
already started building
the fort in Calcutta but they knew that their Kuthi and fort were being built on the
property of the Jagirdar and at the slightest
pretext and with the help of the royal court they could be turned out as they did not have
any permanent interest on that land. This misfortune had happened to them in Hooghly
earlier. That is why they were extremely anxious
to purchase the three villages from the Zamindar. But the Zamindar did not want to sell
the villages without the permission of the Nawab of Bengal. Walsh arrived at Burdwan in
the month of January 1698 A.D. and stayed on for seven months at Burdwan to win his
object. Prince Azim Oshan was far too busy in suppressing the revolts here and there and
did not pay much attention to this matter.
Walsh was able to obtain the permission and the East India
Company purchased the three villages from the Zamindar, Ram Chand Rai, Manohar Rai and
others. This was the time whenanother new East India Company had been floated in England
and the new East India Company was also trying hard to get some trading rights in Bengal.
This led to a good deal of bad blood between the two Companies and the incidence
ofcorruption went up very high. |
