The Sabarna
Choudhurys family was
destined to make history. Prince Azim Oshan, the grandson of the Emperor
Aurangazeb was appointed the ruler of
Bengal, Bihar and Orissa and was meant to oust Nawab Ibrahim Khan who had incurred the
royal disfavor. Azim Oshan lived in Burdwan. The English traders were then competing with
the Danes for trade in
Bengal. The East India Company deputed Mr. Walsh
to Prince Azim Oshan at Burdwan with the avowed object of purchasing the three villages,
viz., Calcutta, Sutanati and Govindapur as they wanted to have a permanent footina for
their trade and commerce. The other mission of Walsh was to be a watchdog against the
Danish interest and to obtain a Nishan or a permit to trade throughout Bengal without any
tax. At this time the Sabarna Roy Choudhurys Zamindar of Barisa owned the three villages
coveted by the English, namely, Calcutta, Sutanati and Govindapur. |
