| Midnapore
borders Bankura district in Bengal and their also different stone implements of different
ages have found. V. Ball had gone round the area and his researches are embodied in a
number of proceedings of the Asiatic Society of Bengal.1 Recently there have been finds of stone implements of later ages at Lalgarh in the subdivision of Jhargram in Midnapore district.The types of the primitive people that lived in Singhbhum, Manbhum, Bankura, Birbhum and Midnapore are also similar. There are thousands of Santals, Savaras, Lodhas and Korahs in Midnapore district and these were the components of the indigenous population of the district and some of the surrounding districts both in Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. They represent a strata of humanity whom we describe as rather primitive, aboriginal or adibasi. The cultural traits of these indigenous sections are, more or less, the same and we still find many similar social and religious functions in Midnapore district, which are observed in Bankura and Birbhum districts of Bihar and Balasore district in Orissa. 1.
