Introduction

Tiruchirapalli (Tiruchi for short) is about 200miles south of Madras and is known as
Dakshina. Kailas. It was originally called
Tirusirapalli named after Tirusiras(meaning
three-headed). A threeheaded demon,
according to the legend, performed penance at the Siva temple here and obtained boons.

Tiruchi was the seat of the ancient Chola
kings who ruled at Woraiyur, now a suburb
of Tiruchi. The Rock Fort is its pride and, is situated in the heart of the city. It has both amythological and a historical tradition and attracts thousands of devotees and visitors. This is counted as one of the famous sthalas because of the temple on the Rock dedicated to Vinayaka known as Uchhi Pillaiyar.
