Introduction
Tiruchirapalli (Tiruchi for short) is about 200miles south of Madras and is known as
Dakshina. Kailas. It was originally called
Tirusirapalli named after Tirusiras(meaning
three-headed). A threeheaded demon,
according to the legend, performed penance at the Siva temple here and obtained boons.
Tiruchi was the seat of the ancient Chola
kings who ruled at Woraiyur, now a suburb
of Tiruchi. The Rock Fort is its pride and, is situated in the heart of the city. It has
both amythological and a historical tradition and attracts thousands of devotees and
visitors. This is counted as one of the famous sthalas because of the temple on the Rock
