The
legend goes to say that once, when
Lord Siva was performing penance in Mount Meru, the heavenly powers, viz. Brahma, Vishnu,
Indra and others of lesser
importance like Adisesha, waited at the
entrance to get a darsan of the Lord of the
Universe. Then all the gods praised
Adisesha for his thousand heads bedecked with jewels on each head and carrying the seven
worlds on his hoods. Further they praised that he was the most blessed as he served the
dual purpose of couch and canopy for Mahavishnu, the Creator of the Universe.
This enraged Vayu and stirred up jealously
in him. He therefore challenged Adisesha for a trial of strength. Adisesha took up the
challenge and retorted that he could devour Vayu if he so wished. This further annoyed and
irritated Vayu and they finally resolved to prove their respective strength in a combat. |
