There
is a shrine dedicated to Siva under
the local name of Tayu-maanavar. The
legend goes to say that a pious lady,
advanced pregnancy, 'had to cross River
Kaveri which she could not as the r was in
spate. Stranded on the bank, the poor lady
was left helpless.
Then the merciful Lord Siva appeared as her mother
and attended her as mid-wife. So Lord Siva came to be known as Tayumanavar (Tayum--mother
also; anavar-who became). There is a beau tank near the Rock Temple, known as Teppa-
kkulam, which adds to the beauty of the town and the shrine. |
