The
chip that fell at Tiruchi is called Rock Fort. The eastern portion of the Rock looks like
a huge bull with its head lifted up in pride of having a shrine on his back, the Vinayaka
temple on its hump and the belfry on its crest. So the Rock is known as Rishabhachalam
(Rishabha means bull).
There is an interesting le connected with the
origin of the temple of Vinayaka at the top o Rock. Vibhishana, who was returning to his
country, Ceylon, from Ayodhya with the Ranga Vimanam, presented to him by
Rama, near Tiruchi to perform some religious rites on the bank of River Kaveri.
He handed over the Ranga Vimanam to a
Brahmin youth who came way, with strict
instructions not to place it on the ground. |
