TIRUVENGADU

Lord Siva, touched by the deep devotion of the farmer, showered his grace on him and blessed him that a son like Tirujnana Sambandar is born to him. Accordingly a son was born. To the Sivabhakta in due course, who was later given the name Meikandar, meaning one whom had realised the ultimate Truth.

According to another legend, Lord Siva punished Yama, the Lord of Death, for the sake of a bhakta, Swetaketu, son of Sage Uddalaka, who was worshipping Lord Nataraja at Chidambaram. Swetaketu came to know that he was due to die when he completed his eighth year. In order to overcome death, he came to Tiruvengadu, installed a Siva Linga and worshipped the Lord. When it was time for Swetaketu to leave the world, Yama approached him and in the usual manner tried to take away his life.
