ASOKA
AS A BROTHER |
|
Vitasoka
was Asoka's younger brother; by blood relation only. But not in
professing the faith, nor acquisition of skills. In anything
whatsoever, for that matter. In brief, they were poles apart.
Vitasoka did not embrace Buddhism, nor did he esteem any one belonging
to that creed. He was a staunch follower of Tirthankars, who were
the inveterate enemies of Buddhists and so inimical to Buddhism in
principle and practice. According to them, the Buddhists loved
easeful life in graceful surroundings, and were averse to pain. They
were hollow, and their religion, shallow. Vitasoka openly and boldly
condemned them in public and private. His royal ire was ascending
unabated with the passage of time.
