A
hermitage was built within the palace ground towards this end. For
realising higher values, Vitasoka later went to Kukkutarma
monastery, and lastly Videha ashram, where he obtained the rank of a
monk. He went through all the ordeals with unusual forbearance, the
Sangha imposed upon him and attained superhuman powers also.
He
returned to the palace, a changed man physically and spiritually. As
in the manner of a true monk, he wore yellow robes and cut his wants
to the barest minimum. His astounding piety, simplicity and
austerity found a hearty welcome in the palace and outside also.
On
seeing Vitasoka in priestly robes, Asoka stepped down from his seat,
ran across the hall, gathered him in his arms, hugged him tightly,
lifted him high and honoured him with an unprecedented affection. It
was an exhilarating experience and appeared like the union of
Jeevathma with Paramatma.
