Indeed,
dedicated practice makes one guiltless and allows his conscience
grow resplendent. It gives self-confidence and ensures a safe place
in the hearts of the community following it. It gives his voice
weight and validity. As a corollary, the practician holds his head
erect and goes about spreading his message and shedding sweetness
and light at every step of his onward march. Surely, it draws the
devotees on kneels by
inspiring veneration in them. Hence, the adage practice must precede
precept.
Realising
its inherent potentialities, Asoka effected many changes in his own
life as the first measure towards the realisation of his ambition.
To begin with, he renounced war. Gave up violence. Abjured the
killing of insects even. He caused the closure of the slaughter of
animals, either for sacrificial purposes, or dietary necessities.
