ASOKA AS A TEETOTALLER

It was a shepherd who suffered from the similar disease as that of the monarch. The shepherd's wife in a frantic search for an expert physician, at last met the royal physician and implored him to cure the disease of her husband at any cost. Her harrowing appeal moved the physician. He determined to help the distressed woman. But the 'man' in him rose up. He feigned affection and promised her with a permanent cure and requested her to send the patient direct to his house.

Of course, he was sent. Not to the physician's house, but to the world above. The jackal Physician, tempted by the reward, took the victim to the palace. The Queen, selfish as she was to the core conveyed him to a secret chamber in the palace. In accordance with instructions of the experts, the victim was put to death immediately to examine the nature of disease by ripping open the stomach. On examination, they found a huge worm in his stomach which was the sole cause of setting at naught the normal functions of the body.
