ASOKA
AS A TEETOTALLER |
|
It
was apparently an incurable malady. People were alarmed. His end was
nearing, they thought. Asoka, whose vital powers had by then been
sucked away by the dreadful disease feared more for the safety of
his Kingdom and prosperity of his people than his personal health.
As he became weaker and weaker day by day, his concern for the
people grew deeper and deeper. After due consideration he wished to
place his son, Kunala on the throne, in whom he saw an able ruler
and noble master. Preparations went ahead in this direction.
When
the news reached the ears of the then wed comely princess, who was
raised to the dignity of Queen - consort following the solemnization
of marriage felt up-rooted. Sure this measure would lower her
prestige and divest her of the royal privileges. As she pondered
over it, her fears grew worse. So, she hit upon
a plan to upset every thing. And she intervened before the
coronation was finalized.
