About 100 km off
Mangalore and on the way to Sringeri, there is an ancient famous temple,
dedicated to Subrahmanya, popularly known as Kukke Subrahmanayadevalayam. It
lies on the bank of river kumarthara and once was a very famous pilgrimage twon
teaming with millions and boasted of having one lakh houses. It has several
temples enshrining deties of both Saivism and Vaishnavism. Skanda and
Sanathkumara samhitas bring out the glory of this kshetra in several pages. It
is said that before the construction of the present temple, there was a sacred
linga found in a basket, called kukke in Kannada and was worshipped with great
ardour, and hence the place was called Kukke Subrahmanya. There present temple
was built by Hoyabalala in the 11th Century. It was visited by many
pithadhipathis, like the famous Madvacharya of Dwaitamata.
