It has several temples enshrining deties of both Saivism and Vaishnavism. Skanda and Sanathkumara samhitas bring out the glory of this kshetra in several pages. It is said that before the construction of the present temple, there was a sacred linga found in a basket, called kukke in Kannada and was worshipped with great ardour, and hence the place was called Kukke Subrahmanya.
