HISTORICITY

This part of Karnataka was blessed twice by spiritual luminaries first, and valorous rulers next, who held their sway over it for hundreds and hundreds of years. The land with its rich fertility, besides yielding bumper crops gave birth to heroic personages, who imbibing the sublimity hovering over the region gave asylum to ascetics and acharyas. Finding its sequestered sublimity congenial, many Jain gurus preferred this area for permanent settlement in the beginning of the Christian era and drenched the entire land with their Vagamrita - spiritual discourses. The rulers realizing the import of their teaching were allowed themselves to be tamed by them, though tamed ferocious lions and leopards single-handed. It enjoyed the golden periods of Rastrakutas, Yadavas, Kadambas, Kongalvas etc, though they accepted the sovereignity of Chalukyas or other imperial monarchs.
