Hoyasala
dynasty started with him thus in 1005 AD ruled this region for over four
centuries with unparalleled eminence. Fact or fiction, the dynasty that began
with Sala came to be called Hoyasalas in memory of that brave youth and his
memorable act.
The Kings that ruled were tolerant
to all religions, though staunch Jains by religion. Sala built many Jain
Basadis-mandirs both at the place of his birth and at Halebidu. His son Nrpa
Kama assuming the title of Rajamallapermadi asserted and repelled the Chola
attack. It was during Vinayaditya's reign, the capital from Sosevuru was shifted
to Belur. It is from this period, temple construction went on war-footing, as it
were, and by the time Bittideva - Vishnuvardana, his grandson ascended the
throne, the empire swelled in size along with a mush-room growth of temples
everywhere.
