LORD HOYALESWARA OF HALEBIDU

Hoyasala dynasty started with him thus in 1005 AD ruled this region for over four centuries with unparalleled eminence. Fact or fiction, the dynasty that began with Sala came to be called Hoyasalas in memory of that brave youth and his memorable act.

The Kings that ruled were tolerant to all religions, though staunch Jains by religion. Sala built many Jain Basadis-mandirs both at the place of his birth and at Halebidu. His son Nrpa Kama assuming the title of Rajamallapermadi asserted and repelled the Chola attack. It was during Vinayaditya's reign, the capital from Sosevuru was shifted to Belur. It is from this period, temple construction went on war-footing, as it were, and by the time Bittideva - Vishnuvardana, his grandson ascended the throne, the empire swelled in size along with a mush-room growth of temples everywhere.
