THE
EPISODE OF SALA
There existed
many Parnasalas and gurukulas then. And in one of them once Sudattamuni, a Jain
ascetic of great spiritual fame was living. And teaching too. There was Sala, a
pupil in teens noted for his courage and compassion. One day, all on a sudden, a
tiger attacked the guru, who cried 'Hoy Sala' which means 'Sala Strike'. Hearing
it, Sala came forward and killed it with a mere bamboo stick available at that
moment. By his spontaneous action and daredevilry the guru was saved to the
amazement of all. Later, he emerged as a man of superb physique and superior
psyche, and founded a small principality, which developed into a big kingdom
extending from South Arcot to Coorg and from Sholapur to Tanjavur covering the
present Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharastra states during its heyday. And it
adopted the emblem of a youth righting a leogriff, representing Sala saving
Sudattamuni by killing the
Sardula, who blessed Sala anon to blossoming into a King of Kings.
