It
happened that the Vindhya Mountain was growing up higher and higher,
perhaps with the intention of out beating the Everest, the
highest peak. Its abnormal growth in height was unwanted and
anomalous that created hindrance to the movement of heavenly bodies
- the Sun and the Moon. When their regular movement was prevented,
certain parts were thrown into eternal darkness, and others in
perpetual glare and intense heat. The affected sages went to
Agasthya and prayed for solution. Though unwilling to leave Kasi,
the Mokshapuri even for a short period, he moved out it for
manavabhyudaya with regrets and came to the Vindyas, and said then,
"I am on tour to the down South, give me way now and do not
raise your head till I return from it". Listening Vindhya at
once gave way, for he knew what Agasthya was, and how he drank seas
to save Devaloka from the formidable demons hiding in the sea.
Agasthya then settled down at Draksharama for some years and moved
to further South later, but never went back. So the Vindhyas never
raised its head, nor went on with further growth obstructing the
regular passage of the Sun and Moon. The sages heaved a sigh of
relief, and the world saw equal distribution of Sun's brilliance and
Moon's coolness.
