THE
KSHETRA AND TEMPLE
The
Sthalapuranam gives an elaborate account of this Srisaila kshetra
covering a very wide area of 30 x 30 amadas with four entrances-Tripurantakam
in the East, Siddhavatam in the South, Alampuram in the West and
Umamaheswaram in the North, encompassing in its wide area as many as
nine holy peaks, nine rivers, nine caves, nine towns, nine wells and
nine Matapeetas. Skandapuram devotees as many as 12,500 slokas to
bring about the glory of this famous Saivakshetra, besides the Vedas
and epics growing eloquent in description on this. The sacred shrine
atop the hill of 1500 feet above sea level, looking like the crest
jewel of the Nallamala hills looks upon the holy river Krishna
called Patalaganga here. It is encircled by a high massive outer
prakaram with a 6 feet wide wall on all four sides, measuring 2120
feet in length and raises to an average height of 20 feet with three
gateways-the Northern one called Sivaji gopuram; the Southern,
Hariharya gopuram, and the Eastern Krishna Devaraya gopuram.
