is this holy kshetra visited by the Pandavas during their Vanavasa;
it is in this holy kshetra, everyone is permitted to offer personal
worship to the Siva linga, eradicating thereby religious inequality
and social ostracism; it is here alone every caste has built
choultries for the convenience of visiting pilgrims and making
annadana through cut the year; it is here Virasaivas established one
of their four main Maths for carrying on several noble
ministrations; it is this place that give Sivaji the invincible
sword that brought him spectacular victory over Muslims; it is here
Buddhism held its sway under the aegis of Acharya Nagarjuna; it is
in this region, particularly the Patalaganga area found special
stones for making Sivalingas; it is here Siddhas, one of the
principal sects of Saivism, practised many yogas to attain Siddhi,
and mastered Rasayoga-the system of changing base metal into gold;
it is here the Kapalika Saivas attempted to offer Sri Sankara as
narabali to the Goddess; and it is here built the Hydroelectric
Project across the river Krishna in the recent past.
