VINAYAKA'S
VICTORY
According
to another legend, once there developed on odd, yet hot dispute
between Shanmuga and Vinayaka over their marriage who should be
married first? Started as a pastime prattle, it developed into an
unwieldy uproarious war between the two that needed adjudication by
their parents-Uma and Maheswar. Hearing to the two sides, Lord
Maheswar said, "He who makes a Pradakshan of the world first
will be the winner, and he will be eligible to marry first". At
once Shanmuga seated on his mount Mayura started for Bhupradakshana,
whereas Vinayaka went round once his parents and said that he was
the winner, and quoted relevant evidence from the scriptures that
parents are the living gods and going round them tantamounts going
round the world. His wisdom pleased them most and decided him as the
victor, but Shanmuga returning after sometime found his elder
made fit for the wedding.
Blaming
the verdict as erroneous, and the parents partial, he left Kailas
and came to this hill. To appease and convince him of the right
decision, Siva and Parvathi came to this hill. When all went well,
the devotees requested Lord Siva to dwell here for ever. He nodded
and is staying since then. Yet, there is another, version recorded
in a slightly different way that attributes the quarrel over
ghanaphal given by Narada and the hill is Palani.
