'Bejjam'
is the Telugu word for tunnel or hole. As the tunnels are made in
hills by the grace of God, this area was called Bejjawada or
Bezawada, for short. It went by the names of Bijapuri and
Vijayavatika - all honorific names signifying its glory. It fame was
further heightened by to existence of three enviable factors -
kshetram, thirtham and Daivam. Undoubtedly, it was, and is a holy
kshetra, for enshrining the images of Lord Siva, in more than three
shrines; Parvathi in the role of Durga, and they are being adored
with ardour unparalleled; secondly it is a place of holy thirtha;
for the river Krishna as mentioned in the Puranas is more sacred
than Ganga, since Ganga springs from the foot of Lord Mahavishnu,
whereas Krishna emerged from the body of the Lord itself, so a mere
darsan purges one off sins; thirdly it is the abode of the most
compassionate of God -Lord Siva and he is abiding here with his
inseparable consort Parvathi under the name of Durga. Hence the
holiness of the place to a degree greater, nay the greatest
resulting in the prosperity of people in every segment of life, and
what is more it is handed down from generation to generation like a
hoary legacy.
