The
age of mechanical medicine is gradually giving way to natural
healing, with the new movement in alternative and complimentary
forms of medicine. The information revolution is bringing people
together in many ways, with companies having branches or members
from all over the world from different cultural and religious
backgrounds. No one knows exactly where these trends will eventually
take us but that much that has been prominent will fade into
insignificance, and the duality of the modern West versus the rest
of the world is losing its validity.
However
many of the old negative trends continue as well. We are in an age
of growing pollution with the devastation of the ecosystem happening
on every continent. New genetic engineering is threatening to
permanently alter the nature of species all over the world in ways
that cannot be predicted. Our cities are becoming unfit to live, our
water unfit to drink, and our air unfit to breathe. The world
population, though slowing in growth, is still increasing beyond not
only what is useful but what may be sustainable. The proliferation
of the poor and uneducated masses makes it hard to improve the
conditions of life in many developing countries. Above
all the high tech age has bred a media monster, an ever invasive,
violent and vulgar media that is intruding everywhere. Sensate
materialism is becoming the main motive force in the lives of people
all over the world, even as our cultural and intellectual elite
strives to look beyond it. In spite of globalism a powerful
religious fundamentalism is growing and missionary aggression
continues over much of the world fueled by high tech or oil money.
What few native cultures are left, like their natural habitats, are
being eliminated or preserved in a few places for their novelty and
recreation value only.
